I was curious about a person so arrogant as to say something like this: “If I am not fully persuaded, I laugh at the orator.” Based on what is in Wikipedia, Selden had quite and active life. It appears he was not one of those intellects sitting in the proverbial ivory tower but took a very active part, often at his peril, in affairs of the day.
