A Numerological Connection Between Louis Philippe I And Napoleon III?

In Borderland: A Quarterly Review and Index, Vol. 2, July 1895, I found the following numerological coincidences which involved the important events in the lives of Louis Phillipe and Napoleon III:

According to the paper mentioned above, this observation first appeared in a daily French paper dated 1869. I think the article aimed to argue that there was some sort of numerological connection between the two French rulers and this may be an augury of their downfall.

Anyway, this could have been a cool little coincidence if not for a fact that there was a big error. Napoleon III became Emperor on December 2, 1852, not 1853, albeit it was close. This is unfortunate, but if nothing else, it makes for a good story.

    1. “Fake” news have existed far longer than that. In this case though, while I haven’t read the original article, I suspect that this was published in the Varieties section of the paper, where you can things like horoscope and other crazy rumors.

    1. I think that this was first observed by Martin Gardner who published it in Scientific American. Over the years, some people have added some embellishment to the original list to make it sound more spectacular.
