6 Steps To Succeed In Teaching With Technology

Everyone wants to use technology in the classroom, but it is the uneasy relationship many schools and teachers have with technology that is discouraging its adoption. Most bear the notion that technology distracts students and decreases their engagement in the classrooms.  However, many teachers and educators view technology as a catalyst for improving learning among the students, but they also believe the scope of technology should be limited.

Most educators can’t really comprehend how technology can be introduced in the classroom or how it is used. Maybe they’re simply too busy, grading papers, prepping students for tests, meeting standards, or simply they aren’t too good working with computers.  But this excuse isn’t good enough today.

The fact is in this digital age, it’s too late in trying to keep technology out of the students’ lives.  Keeping students away from technology won’t protect them. In fact, if teachers keep blocking technology from them, they’re actually inhibiting them from being successful later when they’ll graduate and look for jobs as jobs these days require candidates to have skills in technology.

If you’re a teacher and uncomfortable using educational technology for teaching in the classroom or home tuition, fear not. There are easy ways to overcome your fear of technology and bring you up to speed. Let’s go:

Use PowerPoint To Review Lessons


This one is a no-brainer. Many tech-savvy teachers have been using Microsoft PowerPoint slides for lectures and reviewing lessons. But there is a little twist here. Unlike those boring, uninspiring white slides, teachers are using techniques based on famous game shows, such as “Jeopardy!” or “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” These templates are available for teachers to download, and they can use these to create their own content. It is a fun way for students as well as teachers to review important material.

Ask Students To Complete A Written Assignment Online

It’s common for people today to have their own website or blog as a personal creative outlet. So, why not ask your students to create their own blog and have them publish all of their classroom essays or assignment online? Creating your own website or blog is fast and cheap now thanks to templates found on WordPress or Squarespace. You can also ask your students to create their website template and publish all the content they’ve been studying there. These activities will help familiarize them and you with the Web 2.0 world.

Ask Students to Do a Webquest


If you aren’t familiar with a WebQuest, it’s basically searching the internet for specific information. For instance, students are asked to write reports on some of the important socio-economic issues facing today’s generation. They should get all the information searching the Internet to determine what the main issues are and what is that they can do about them. It’s a great way to integrate Internet searches into their curriculum.

Create A Class Website

A website dedicated to each class is a great way of incorporating technology into the classroom. A class website can be something that has the bare essentials of a website only to be used for online bulletin boards, announcements, class schedules. And if that’s not cutting for you, the website can be developed into an elaborate one includes class photos, a blog, downloadable lessons, test results, online quizzes, etc.

Give Multimedia Presentations


Spice up your traditional lectures by using PowerPoint presentations that includes detailed photos, elaborate diagrams, sound effects, audio or video. You can ask your students to prepare multimedia presentations as a way to review their lessons for quizzes or semester exams.

Listen or Create Podcasts

Podcasts are very popular now. Almost every company, brand, social media influencer, and so on has one. So, it’s only natural that as a teacher you can create a podcast of your lectures for your students. There are many professors who are doing this. You can also share podcasts of interviews of the book’s authors your students are reading. In addition, You can also listen to podcasts to update or improve your teaching materials. There are thousands of podcasts available on the internet. Choose the ones that meet your students’ requirements.

  1. I teach 2nd grade and I have my students write their narratives using google docs and inserting photos to go along with their writing! This is a great list of simple ways to integrate tech into the classroom!


  2. I’m a school Technology specialist and a tech coach for a school district down in Utah, and we implement blended learning. What we run into is teachers using technology for blended learning, but parents disapproving. It’s such a bummer. I just wanted to add some other cool tech software. Nearpod and mystery Skype or Skype for classroom is amazing. Lego mind storms and Minecraft education edition. A lot of these tools are free for educators.


  3. This is very helpful post especially those who wants to start their career in the field of teaching. Teaching technology is a bit difficult. you have to be very careful that you are providing right information to students.


  4. I recently got to know of “genius hour” in public schools, where kids make how to, YouTube videos. They get to be the experts teaching. It starts in 3rd grade. I believe it’s a good example of combining skills learned at school to something kids can relate to using technology.
