It’s easy for a rich man to become poor, but not the other way around. Transposing POOR to RICH in a game of word ladder isn’t as simple as well as you need ten steps to accomplish that. Can you figure out the steps? (Hint: One of the words is a contraction.)
(Note: In a game of word ladder, your goal is to transpose a word to another word by changing the initial word’s single letter to form another word. Do the process until it becomes the target word. For example, COLD to WARM: COLD → CORD → CARD → WARD → WARM.)
POOR → POOL → FOOL → FOOT → FONT → DON’T → DINT → DINE → DICE → RICE → RICH.
I felt that there are shorter solutions but I couldn’t find them. So, I cheated and used a computer.
As it turned out, there are a large number of solutions. The shortest solution that Mathematica found was five steps:
POOR → POOK → ROOK → ROCK → RICK → RICH.
Have you found other solutions?
