I am unable to verify the authenticity of the following story. Nevertheless, it’s quite interesting.
When Frank Winfield Woolworth (the founder of F. W. Woolworth Company) first opened his store, a businessman in the area felt threatened. So, he advertised in the local paper. The ad read:
DO YOUR LOCAL SHOPPING HERE. WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR FIFTY YEARS!
Woolworth, not wanting to lose, countered it with this ad:
WE’VE BEEN IN BUSINESS ONLY ONE WEEK – ALL OF OUR MERCHANDISE IS BRAND-NEW!
I would like to know the aftermath of this incident if this really did occur.

Amusing, but insightful. Generations later, the Woolworth company found itself outdated and outmaneuvered.

Great story, sounds authentic. I also smiled at the Lego placard.

What a great post. As I worked in advertising for years, I so enjoy a good advertisement. When my children were small, I certainly REMEMBER stepping on a lego — super painful, such a good ad. THEN your story on Woolworth, a brilliant counter attack ad!!
